This essay should be double spaced, four to six pages long. It should be submitted on Canvas. Make sure that you provide citations for all key points of information. Make sure that you use at least seven sources including materials from the NAACP and Black Lives Matter.
The NAACP is the nation’s largest and most recognized Civil Rights organization. It was created in 1909 after a violent race riot in Springfield, Illinois. Its white and black founders saw it as a multi-racial organization seeking to provide equality and social justice for African Americans. More recently, Black Lives Matter () was formed after the death of Treyvon Martin. Its founders are black women, and its organization is unique in many respects because it tries to strategize based on historical actions.
The question for this assignment is to 1) explore the formation and function of both organizations, 2) assess the achievements of both groups, and 3) ultimately decide which one best suits the needs of the African American community today.
Keep in mind the historical leadership issues between Garvey and DuBois, DuBois and Washington, and King and Malcolm X as you analyze the organizations. You might find that militancy works best in some situations while moderation works better in others. You will equally have to analyze the black population by age groups, gender and degrees of wealth and education. Therefore you will equally have to decide on the conditions and then analyze the current political climate to decide which organization works best.
